Psyllium husk, also known as isphagula, is the husk of the seeds of the plan plantago psyllium. This plant grows mostly in the Middle East. Psyllium husk has long been popular as one of the best ways of including more dietary fiber in the diet because of its high fiber content, especially when it is compared to other types of grains. For example, oat bran has about five grams of fiber for every one third cup. But psyllium husk has about 71 grams of fiber for basically the same amount in a cup.

Even though psyllium husk is chiefly known for its beneficial effect on digestion, clinical studies have also revealed that psyllium husk can also help in lowering blood cholesterol. It was discovered that when psyllium husk is taken regularly, the low density lipoproteins, more popularly known as bad cholesterol, drops down to as much as seven percent.
Other studies have shown that regular intake of psyllium husks can also help in passing more fat in the stool, which means it can contribute in effective weight loss.
