What Is Salicylic Soap?

Salicylic soap, also called salicylic acid soap, is a product that is used to cleanse the skin. As the name implies, the main ingredient is salicylic acid, which has been proven to be effective in treating acne, among other skin conditions. Salicylic soap does contain other ingredients which also contribute to its efficacy. Some common ingredients included in this kind of soap are sulfur and benzoyl peroxide.

More than salicylic soap, however, there are usually other products included in a treatment program. These products also contain amounts of salicylic acid and are used in conjunction with the soap, in order to achieve maximum results. Some products that are usually part of an acne-treatment regimen include toners and moisturizers.

Salicylic soap is effective in fighting acne because its acid base works in such a way that the shedding of dead skin cells are hastened. This is beneficial to skin health since the dead skin cells serve to block the pores, which can lead to more acne. Salicylic acid is not an antibacterial agent, but it does remove and prevent blackheads and whiteheads. And, since dead skin cells tend to accumulate over time, salicylic soap has to be used long term.

The disadvantage of using salicylic soap is the tendency for the skin to dry out. This can be combated by the regular use of moisturizers. You also have to take a look at the strength of the salicylic soap, as they come in varying degrees. The higher the concentration, the more effective it is. However, this also means that the risk for dryness is higher.
