What Is Cumbia?

What is Cumbia
Cumbia is the dance of courtship and the dance of freedom and liberty. I began learning cumbia in Nayarit, and later Mazatlan, and finally Tijuana. Mexican Cumbia has a diverse history as far as music and dance style goes. My view of cumbia is viewed through the Mexican Cumbia.

Cumbia itself traces its origins to Colombia's slave and lower class population, and until the last 30 years it has been the dance of the working class. But recently it has made its way into bars, and nightclubs around the world and has been popularized largely due to Mexican immigration to the United States, and European travelers bringing it back to Europe.

History of Cumbia
"Cumbia is a Colombian musical style and folk dance that is considered to be representative of Colombia, along with Vallenato. Cumbia originated from the Caribbean coast of Colombia, with folcloric variants in Panama. Cumbia began as a courtship dance practiced among the slave population that was later mixed with European instruments and musical characteristics. It was also used during the Colombian struggle for independence as an expression of resistance against Spain, therefore, most of its songs' messages were related to freedom or slavery." via Wikipedia
