Best known for her comedy antics, Carol Creighton Burnett was born on the 26th of April 1933. She was the only daughter to two alcoholic parents who allowed her grandmother to take Carol as a young child from them in San Antonio, Texas to be raised in Hollywood, California. She was later raised in boarding house.
A graduate of the University of California, Carol Burnett chose acting as a career. She began in theater, performing secondary roles. Her move from California to New York allowed her to diversify as she tried out the comedy club circuit. She got a few breaks in television appearing on variety shows and small television roles. She was popular on variety shows for her parody performance of the song ‘I Made a Fool of Myself Over John Foster Dulles’. This increased her television appearances and she even had a part in a the sitcom Stanley.
In 1959, Carol Burnett finally got her big break as she was cast in two musical shows at about the same time. On The Gary Moore Show, Carol Burnett played a plethora of characters which gained her recognition as she won an Emmy award in 1962. CBS eventually signed Carol Burnett up for her own variety show, The Carol Burnett Show. This was a huge success for several years, running until 1978 and receiving 22 Emmy Awards.
Since 1978 Carol Burnett has continued with a few television roles in both comedy and drama shows. She lives in Hawaii with her third husband, and has had three children.
