Who Is Daisaku Ikeda?

Dr. Daisaku Ikeda is a prolific writer, a poet, a man of peace and religious leader of over twelve million members around the world. He is the third founding president of a Buddhist lay organization called Soka Gakkai International. Soka Gakkai means society for the creation of value. With this, Dr. Ikeda has been very active in promoting peace, culture and education through his writings and dialogues with people from different backgrounds. His efforts for education, establishing the Soka University in Hachioji, Japan and in Aliso Viejo, California in America earned him a resume like no other. He is a recipient of 300 honorary doctorates and several honorary citizenships from Universities and countries around the world.

Born from a poor family of seaweed processer, Dr. Ikeda spent his childhood days suffering from poor health and poverty. During the World War II, he has been a witness to the horrors of war that took the life of his brother who was then forced to join the Japanese military. His experience in the war inspired him to fight for justice and promote peace for the happiness of all humankind. He has published several books on peace, culture and education, including the longest book series entitled, The Human Revolution. Dr. Ikeda at eighty-two is still active in writing peace proposals every year submitted to the United Nations. He and his wife Kaneko Ikeda are always active in sending encouragements to more than twelve million members of the Soka Gakkai International in one hundren ninety-two countries and territories around the world.
