Founded in 1821 as a preparatory school for boys, Widener University was also known for some time as a Military Academy. It only accepted women and civilians into its educational civilian programs in 1966 and became a university in 1979. It presently has four (4) campuses offering various programs of study leading to associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. The university is comprised of the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Hospitality Management, School of Nursing, School of Human Service Professions, School of Business Administration, School of Engineering, and the University College. The University College is tasked with providing opportunities to adult learners which include online programs.
Online classes are typically 15 weeks in length and are delivered through web-based software known as WebStudy. Online programs are offered in several areas of study such as Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, Philosophy and Religious Studies, Business, Liberal Arts and Sciences, General Studies and Humanities, English Language and Literature/Letters, Mathematics and Statistics, Health Professions, Clinical Sciences and Social Services, History, Security and Protective Services, and Psychology. The university is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Online classes are provided by at least three (3) campuses of the university in Chester and Exton, PA and Wilmington, DE. Financial aid and scholarships are available to qualified students.
